Language Center
Foundation and responsibilities:
The Philadelphia University Language Center (PULC) was established in 1998 as an independent academic unit directly reporting to the University's president. It is responsible for :
- Making use of the University's linguistic capabilities and expertise, developing its student's language skills and abilities, offering training courses, and conducting studies and research in language development.
- Designing and presenting the University's language requirements.
- Preparing, supervising, and up-dating the English Placement Test(EPT) used for assigning students to Remedial English, English Skills I, and English Skills II .
- Designing and offering non-degree courses in the European languages of French, Italian, Spanish , and German , and the oriental languages of Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish , and other languages the University deems necessary .
- Designing and offering the University's programs of Arabic for speakers of other languages.
- Designing and conducting an Arabic placement test for speakers of other languages in order to place students in different levels in accordance with their scores on the test.
- Designing, offering, and evaluating courses in Arabic for speakers of other languages (ASOL).
- Designing and offering courses for the University's graduate students in cooperation with the departments concerned.
- Participating in the provision of language tuition for the community provided by the Philadelphia University Center of Consultations and Community Service.
- Supervising the University's language labs both technically and administratively.
- Offering training courses in English and other modern languages both for university employees and non-employees (local community).
- Supervising language qualification programs leading to the TOEFL and IELTS.
- Holding seminars, conferences, and training courses in language acquisition and teaching methodology.
- Doing research in the area of language development and teaching methodology, and designing programmes and teaching modules.
- Holding placement tests in the languages offered by the Language Center at the request of the University's faculties and institutions.
