The Department of English at Philadelphia University was established in the Fall semester of the 1991-1992 academic year. Its faculty members include 3 full professors, 2 associate professors, and 4 assistant professors.

The Department’s faculty members are engaged in a variety of tasks, including teaching the courses required by the study plan and supervising students’ reports and research papers.

The Department makes use of the most up-to-date facilities and teaching methods, including state-of-the-art labs and a well-stocked library in order to create a quality learning/teaching environment and to turn out well-trained graduates. Due to its commitment to enhancing the academic caliber of its faculty, the Department also stresses the importance of academic research. To this end, it provides all sorts of possible assistance in order for its faculty to develop their research projects, including support for attending relevant conferences held locally and abroad.

The Department’s faculty members are noted for their active participation in local, regional, and international activities in cultural, academic, and creative areas. The Department provides opportunities for a variety of extracurricular activities in which faculty members, students, and specialists from outside the University take part. An example is the International English Department Day, which coincides with the birthday of Shakespeare on April 23rd. Another is the Student Symposium that gathers together students from the various government and private universities.

The Department offers two programs:

  1. A Bachelor’s Program in English Language and Literature
  2. A Master’s Program in English Language and Literature

The Department tries to strike a balance among the following components: basic language skills, linguistics in all its branches, English and American literature of all genres and ages, and translation. In addition, the Department helps students to master the English language and to fully appreciate the role of literature in culture and society.

The Department has always been keen on establishing a strong link with the community by providing services to gifted students and teachers in the various governorates of Jordan. Above all, it provides the local and Arab workforce with qualified degree-holders.
