Title: Classifying the Hotel Spa Tourist: A Multidimensional Qualitative Approach

Author: Dr. Rami Tawil, Published Year: 0

Abstract: There is a sense of uncertainty regarding the classification of spa tourists that makes forecasting problematic. A qualitative study was undertaken to provide a greater level of insight, this required developing a framework that was divided into three dimensions based on the destination facility choice process. Coding was used as an appropriate analytical tool that resulted in developing 10 types of spa tourists. The results were further funnelled and a 4 type broad typology was constructed, its significance lies in its consideration of the spa destination choice process as a whole, rather than a heavy emphasis being placed merely on reasons people visit spas, which has dominated many of the previous spa typologies.

Title: Fundamentals of Public Relations for the Hotel and Tourism Industry:An Introductory Handbook

Author: Dr. Mouafak Al-Hamiary and Rami Tawil, Published Year: 0

Abstract: Traditionally the tourism and hospitality industry depends largely on public relations (PRs) programmes and techniques to ensure that the general public receives a clear, attractive impression of the tourism product image and services. The reliance on PRs in the process of operational planning for any tourism project or resort suggests that managers have a general familiarity with the concept and its functions; however, the majority of them are still unaware of how to operate the system of PR on both internal and external levels. A flourishing PRs campaign can help to increase the tourism establishment's revenue by giving messages via newspapers, internet, television or radio, which attracts a profitable or identifiable market for the tourism establishment. Today, public relations in the tourism and hospitality industry calls for more than developing a good tourism product and facilities; it is seen as an interactive channel of communication between the tourism producer and guests that takes place during the pre-selling, selling, participation, and post involvement stages.

Title: Examining of Amman Stock Market Behavior

Author: Dr. Abed El-Nafea Al-Zarari, Published Year: 0

Abstract: Several papers consolidated the fact that correlation through major stock markets have occurred in the last years. There are many reasons for elucidating that the returns and instability of largest equity markets may be related. The economies of the developed countries are related through trade and investment, so that any news about economic components in one country most likely has involvement for the other one. An international share-pricing model shows correlation between stock returns in different countries. Some suggest that thrive financial market integration will increase the degree of correlation between the stock returns of several countries by making portfolio managers in the home market more harmonious to change in foreign markets . So from a portfolio management view point, a higher correlation markets make it uneasy to vary the total risk of portfolio by simply spreading investment across countries. A second logical reason for correlation of stock price changes is market contagion. However the main objective of the present study is to discuss time-varying correlation of current stock price change of ASM with other markets, hence emerging market are subsequent of developed stock markets. The present study find that the correlations of stock price index between markets are not constant over time, it show that correlation has positive trend for 13 countries of 14. This finding suggests that stock markets are getting more integrated; also find that the countries that have positive and significant p value create coherence. Potentially, these findings impose dramatic challenges for shares portfolio managers. The continuously changing correlation sample market makes it very difficult to select an ex ante optimal investment strategy. Last but not least , since there is positive link between correlation and market instability , investors and risk managers do not get the full utility of risk diversification , especially in disordered financial markets , either regional or international

Title: Jordanian Commercial Bank Strategies in High- rate of Return Realization and its Relation with Liquidity Gap Management Performance

Author: Dr. Abed El-Nafea Al-Zarari, Published Year: 0

Abstract: Managing financial institutions has never been an easy task, but in recent years it has become more difficult because of greater uncertainly in economic environment. Gap management, "which is the difference between the dollar amounts of rate-sensitive assets and rate-sensitive liabilities has received more consideration as a result of substantial fluctuations in the market interest rate, which affect the value of assets and liabilities held by financial institutions. A major part of the business of banks is providing loans, and for theses banks to earn high profit , they must make successful loans that are paid back in full ( and so have low credit risk ), but in reality , however , credit risk increases . Therefore it is not surprising that bank managers have become more concerned about managing the risks their banks face. The main objective of the study is to investigate the relationship between liquidity risks, interest rate risk and liquidity gap management in the commercial banks. The aim of the present research is to examine the effect of the different types of risk on liquidity gap management for a sample of Jordanians banks. It also aims to see if Jordanian commercial banks are complying with the Basel committee on banging supervision issues. This study, therefore, is of importance, because no similar study has been conducted in this area in Jordan, and it will be of great benefit to other researchers interested in this subject

Title: Dividend Yields Predictability of Stock Returns: Case of Emerging Markets

Author: Dr. Izz Eddien N. Ananzeh, Published Year: 0

Abstract: We investigate the cross-sectional pattern of stock returns for eight emerging markets using Vector Autoregressive Approach (VAR) to test whether dividend yields can predict stock returns through impulse response characteristics. Our results confirm that dividend yield shocks play an important role in driving fluctuation in stock returns and this relation is positive. These results reflect the fact that stock returns react positively to dividend changes either immediately or after short period of time. In some stock markets there is an immediate upward reaction by investors to dividend news like the case of Jordan, Morocco, Korea, and Malaysia. In some other markets like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, and Thailand investors delay their investment strategies in the period immediately after dividend changes, to study the signal of dividend announcements

Title: Calendar Anomalies in Emerging Markets: The Case of Jordan

Author: Prof. Khaled Sartawi, Published Year: 0

Abstract: According to Fama’s Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) the market price of a security reflects all historical information. Therefore, one cannot consistently earn increased returns on the basis of price change predictions made on the basis of a correlation between past prices and future stock prices. In other words, stock prices move randomly and any predictable price change or observable patterns are called anomalies. Over the years, researchers have uncovered many anomalies in the market including: Friday the 13th effect, day of the week effect, Halloween indicator, good weather effect, daylight savings time, January effect, good mood effect, geographical distance, winning home-team effect, and presidential elections effect. For example, Nippani and Medlin (2002, Journal of Economics and Finance) studied the impact of the delay in the declaration of a winner in the US Presidential Elections of 2000 on the performance of stock markets (S & P 500, DJI, and NASDAQ). There was a significant initial negative reaction to the delay in the election results. The reaction was for only 4 days and most negative reaction was noticed immediately after the delay occurred. The market adjusted for the delay after that (confirming the market efficiency concept). Many of these anomalies are known to those in the market and according to the efficient market hypothesis investors should take advantage of the return differences. However the phenomena still seems to exist. Furthermore, most previous research has focused on developed financial markets and few studies have included emerging markets.

Title: The impact of transformation to social-market economy on the development of the tools of management accounting in Syria "An analytical study of Syrian general industrial sector”

Author: Dr. Abdul Aziz A. Abdul Rahman, Published Year: 0

Abstract: The nature of the problem lies in studying the extent of convenience between the management accounting tools used in the companies of the general Industrial sector and the manufacturing systems in these companies and how these tools could meet the new strategies of the Syrian general industrial sector. The study aims at examining the reality of the management accounting tools used in the companies of the Syrian general industrial sector and to show the influence of transition to the social economy market in Syria on the practices of management accounting. Then show the reasons that prevent the use some of modern management accounting tools. To achieve the final goal of the research, a field study has been executed on a sample of the companies of the Syrian general industrial sector by using questionnaire .These data have been tested by using a set of statistical methods to verify if the research hypotheses are true or false. The study shows that the used management accounting tools are not sufficient to be in harmony with the environment of modern businesses. The results indicate that the companies of the general sector concentrate on using actual cost. They also tend to operate the activity based costing system as a real alternative to solve the problem of allocating the indirect manufacturing costs. However the study indicates the reasons which detain the use of some management accounting tools instead of others.

Title: the Impact of Fair Value Measurements on Income Statement: IFRS 13 "an Application Study in Insurance Companies"

Author: Dr. Abdul Aziz A. Abdul Rahman, Published Year: 0

Abstract: There has been a steady shift in accounting standards over the past few years, moving away from historical cost measure towards fair value. Proponents view this as a way to deal with traditional criticisms of accounting valuation while making information more relevant to users. This paper attempts to shed some light on this issue by restating some of the financial assets of an insurance company, applying fair value instead of historical-cost-based valuations, and comparing data emerged by using historical costs principle and fair value principle. We find that the numbers on the face of the income statement change considerably and observe that the magnitude of these changes varies between the two policies. However, these findings seem to indicate that a change from historical-cost to fair-value accounting could achieve different results.

Keywords: Fair value, Historical cost, comprehensive income.

Title: The Imperial Legacies of T.E. Lawrence: A Study in Political and Organizational Hybridity

Author: Dr. Naser Khdour, Published Year: 0

Abstract: T.E. Lawrence is a celebrated figure in military history and a key reference point for the idea that small and highly mobile armed units can decisively undermine the strategic capacities of conventional armies and empires. Whilst Lawrence played an important role in supporting Arab self-determination, his legacy has been the subject of some controversy in the Arab world. We show the ‘hybridised’ nature of this legacy in the fields of military intelligence and irregular warfare. Lawrence borrowed the techniques of mobile warfare from local Arab sources during the First World War. This ‘borrowing’ then became the basis of further variations on the theme of mobility and autonomy as the lessons of the Arab revolt were applied to the clandestine operations of organizations such as the SAS and the SOE during the Second World War. The paper explores the processes by which these borrowings occurred; highlighting the ways in which Lawrence’s legacy resonates with the covert operations of today’s intelligence organizations and with contemporary interest in ‘networked’ forms in the aftermath of 9/11.

Title: Unveiling the new coined theme '' Management Hybridity '': A study in culture borrowing

Author: Dr. Naser Khdour, Published Year: 0

Abstract: Post colonial theory has assumed that it should have had an impact direct and indirect on management and organizational structures. However, evidence for such a relationship is not available in the Jordanian private sector due to the absence of empirical research in this field. This study aims to examine the ways in which the legacies of post-colonialism have shaped management in Jordanian enterprises, Case study investigation is used to explore and elucidate the 'management Hybridity' in these organizations, also, to posit an alternative account of cultural ‘borrowing’ that allows traditional and non traditional norms to be juxtaposed in particular ways. Thus, this research challenges the idea that western management practices can be 'imposed' in Middle Eastern contexts and local situations, also the view that Arab societies can be seen as passive recipients of western technology and organization.

Title: The Role of Social Capital in Shaping Management in Jordan: A Case Study on Umniah Company

Author: Dr. Naser Khdour, Published Year: 0

Abstract: This research describes a research project that examines the role of social capital in shaping management in the Jordanian telecoms sector, more precisely Umniah Company. In doing so it has sought to examine the relationship between social capital and the emergence of specifically 'Arab' approaches to management. Case study investigation is used to explore and elucidate the 'lived experience' of management in this organization. The interviews material has shown that social capital is playing a major role in shaping the practice of management. The case study provides empirical support for the idea that this is sustained by networking behavior, by relatively high levels of trust and by the existence of shared norms. The lack of studies on social capital from a management perspective and the lack of studies of such research in the Middle East in general, more precisely Jordan, make this research a path finding research and contributes toward the development of Jordan and contributed towards Arab management by entering Arab management in the management discourse.

Title: Sanitary Conditions of Public Swimming Pools in Amman, Jordan

Author: Dr. Ashraf Abu A'aqoulah, Published Year: 2007

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 4

Abstract: This study was carried out in the summer of 2005 and investigated all of active public swimming pools (85 out of 93) in Amman, the capital of Jordan. The aim of this study was to find out if these swimming pools are in compliance with Jordanian Standards for Swimming Pools Water (JS 1562/2004). The pools were surveyed against the water microbial quality and other physicochemical parameters indicated in the standards. Two samples from each pool were collected for microbial analysis and pools monitoring were carried out during the afternoon of the weekends when the pools are most heavily used. The results indicated overall poor compliance with the standards. Compliance of the pools water to the microbial parameters was 56.5%, for residual chlorine 49.4%, for pH 87.7%, water temperature 48.8%, and bathing load 70.6%. The results also indicated that water microbial quality deteriorated with time. Multivariate analysis showed significant association of water contamination with time of sample collection, residual chlorine, water temperature and load of swimmers. The poor compliance was attributed to lack of proper disinfection, staff training, proper maintenance, and timely inspection.

Title: Fundamentals of Public Relations for the Hotel and Tourism Industry: An Introductory Book

Author: Dr. Mouafak Al-Hamiary and Dr. Rami Tawil, Published Year: 0

Author: Dr. Mowaffak Al Hamiary, Published Year: 0

Abstract: Traditionally the hospitality industry depends largely on Public Relation (PR) programs and techniques to ensure that the general public receives a clear, attractive thought of the tourism product image and service develop. However, the reliance on PR in the process of operational plan for any tourism project or resort showing that managers have a general familiarity with the concept of PR, but the majority of them are still unaware of how to operate the system of PR on both internal and external levels. For example, at an external level, tourism PR calls for more than developing a good tourism product and facilities, it is seen as interactive channel of communication between the tourism producer and guests. For this reason many tourism producers depend on PR campaign as a mean to help them to increase the tourism establishment's revenue by giving massages via newspapers, Internet, television or radio which attract a profitable or identified market to their establishment. The challenges for revitalisation policies are complex; although every public information tool is unique, the options for the future need to the PR Champaign should be studied in the shared context of a all instruments. The emphasis of the paper lies on the exchange of theoretical insights and practical experiences with tourism PR programs. The challenges for revitalization policies are complex; as every Tourism PR program is unique, and the options for the future need should be studied in the shared context of dynamic and competitive Tourism and recreation market. The paper also aims to examine the advantages of PR program and its function, and explain the different stages in developing the effective programs for the successful relationship between the guests and hosts. The paper also highlights the difficulties that managers faced in understanding and applying PR programs, and to find adequate answer to the following questions: 1. To what extent can PR helps to improve organization mission? 2. How we can distinguish between the public relations programs and sales or marketing programs of organizations? 3. To what extent can PR programs assist to sponsorship? 4. What are the techniques which could deal with negative publicity and 'crises management' situations?

Title: The Impact of Global Financial Crises Against Level of Satisfaction (A Case Study of Employee in Five Stars Hotel in Jordan)

Author: Dr. Mowaffak Al Hamiary, Published Year: 0

Abstract: The human element plays a major part in the overall success of the hospitality industry, especially in hotels. The research tries to investigate factors effecting level of hotel employees satisfaction during the global financing crisis period. The research explores the relative importance for such factors and its role in loyalty and performance process. It is clear from the survey results that there is a tendency for those employees who are working at five stars hotels to improve there performance and ability as they can gain more tips from the hotel guests. Most administrative policy realizes this fact and tries to encourage the staff to participate in the training programs in order to achieve its competitive policy. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that make up employee satisfaction during the global financial crisis. Previous researchers see motivation, satisfaction and performance are separate variables that shape employee satisfaction level. This study attempts to explain the complex relationship among the variables that formulate employee level of satisfaction and indicates that the amount of the Tips could be considered not only a dominant factor for level of employee satisfaction for those working in five stars hotels in Jordan, but also as an indicator to performance . Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected using a questionnaire. Correlation coefficient and regression analysis was used to analysis the data to determine which of the motivation elements were more influential in the overall satisfaction of the hotel employee. Findings: administrative motivation elements seem to be of limited importance to structure employee satisfaction during the global financial crisis. Uncontrolled motivation that not related to administrative policy and decision (i.e. the amount of Tips and employee personality) were found to be significantly related to the overall satisfaction of a hotel employee and the Increasing of Performance during the global financial crisis. Research limitations/implications: The focus of this research was on the challenge of hotel policy against the law occupancy rate which may occur during the global finance crises. While the policy of reducing the operational cost is fairly important in helping to attract the hotel guests and to effect guest perceptions and impressions. Hotel managers need to understand the importance of employee perceptions and impressions to face the challenge of competition of other hotels.

Title: Performance of the commercial banks: The Case of Jordan

Author: Dr. Ali Sulieman Alshatti, Published Year: 2014

Abstract: This research aims at examining the competitiveness of the Jordanian commercial banks by using the concentration ratios indices, and by estimating the impact of the banks competitiveness on their performance during the time period (2005 - 2012).To achieve the research objectives the concentration ratio and Herfindahl - Hirschman (HHI) indices have been measured on the basis of the market share of the largest four banks in terms of their total assets, total deposits and total credit facilities, at a descending order of the largest four banks to examine the banks competitiveness, and a model has been used to estimate the impact of the competitiveness indicators on the banks profitability. The empirical results show that there is a high concentration ratio among the largest four banks, relative to the all other Jordanian commercial banks, and an increase in the total assets and total credit facilities, leads to an increase in the banks’ profitability, while an increase in the banks’ total deposits leads to a decline in their profitability, so the researcher think that this conclusion related to existing of an excess cash in the banks treasuries resulting from the increased volume of untapped deposits, and the banks are not enough able to re-invest these deposits in a profitable projects for their benefits.

Title: The Effect of the Liquidity Management on Profitability in the Jordanian Commercial Banks

Author: Dr. Ali Sulieman Alshatti, Published Year: 2015

Abstract: This research seeks to investigate the effect of the liquidity management on profitability in the Jordanian commercial banks during the time period (2005–2012). Thirteen banks have been chosen to express on the whole Jordanian commercial banks. The liquidity indicators are investment ratio, Quick ratio, capital ratio, net credit facilities/ total assets and liquid assets ratio, while return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA) were the proxies for profitability. Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) stationary test model was used to test for a unit root in a time series of the research variables and then testing hypothesis by using regression analysis. The empirical results show that a positive effect of the increase in the quick ratio and the investment ratio of the available funds on the profitability, while there is a negative effect of the capital ratio and the liquid assets ratio on the profitability of the Jordanian commercial banks. The researcher recommends that there is a need for an optimum utilization of the available liquidity in a various aspects of investment in order to increase the banks' profitability, and banks should adopt a general framework of liquidity management to assure sufficient liquidity for executing their operations efficiently, and they should initiate an analytical study of the evolution rates of liquidity and their ability to achieve a balance between sources and uses of funds.

Title: The Relationship between credit risk management and Profitability in The Jordanian Commercial Banks

Author: Dr. Ali Sulieman Alshatti, Published Year: 2015

Abstract: This study aims at examining the relationship between credit risk management and profitability of the Jordanian commercial banks during the period (2005- 2013), thirteen commercial banks have been chosen to express on the whole Jordanian commercial banks. Two mathematical models have been designed to measure this relationship, the researcher concluded that, there is a relationship between credit risk management and profitability in the Jordanian commercial banks measured by ROA and ROE. The researcher further concludes that the credit risk management indicators considered in this research are important variables in explaining profitability of Jordanian commercial banks. Based on findings, the researcher recommends banks to improve their credit risk management to achieve more profits, in that banks should take into consideration, the indicators of Non-performing loans/ Gross loans, Provision for Facilities Loss/Net Facilities and the leverage ratio that were found significant in determining credit risk management. Also, banks should institute appropriate credit risk management strategies by conducting rigorous credit appraisal before loan disbursement and drawdown, and banks in designing an effective credit risk management system, need to establish a suitable credit risk environment; operating under a sound credit granting process, maintaining an appropriate credit administration that involves monitoring, processing as well as enough controls over credit risk, and there is also a need for banks to develop and implement credit scoring and assessment methodologies, review and update the insider lending policies and adopt prudential corporate governance practices, and banks need to design and formulate strategies that will not only minimize the exposure of the banks to credit risk but will enhance profitability and competitiveness of the banks.

Title: The Impact of Public Expenditures on Economic Growth in Jordan

Author: Dr. Ali Sulieman Alshatti, Published Year: 2014

Abstract: This research aims to examine the impact of the public expenditures on economic growth in Jordan during the time period (1993–2013), by determining the contribution of the current and capital expenditures on Education, Health, Economic Affairs, and Housing and community Utilities as a percent of the total public expenditures, and then examining the impact of each one of them on economic growth in Jordan. Two mathematical models have been designed to measure this impact, the first one measures the impact of current functional expenditures, and the second model measures the impact of capital functional expenditures on economic growth in Jordan. The empirical results show that the impact of current and capital expenditures on education has failed to enhance economic growth, and that is due to the high cost of education, especially higher education in the private sector in Jordan, as well as the growing rate of unemployment, and expenditures on health and economic affairs should be encouraged due to their positive impact on economic growth.

Title: Performance of the commercial banks: The Case of Jordan

Author: Dr. Ali Sulieman Alshatti, Published Year: 2014

Abstract: This research aims at examining the competitiveness of the Jordanian commercial banks by using the concentration ratios indices, and then estimating the impact of the banks competitiveness on their performance during the time period (2005 - 2012).To achieve the research objectives the concentration ratio and Herfindahl - Hirschman (HHI) indices have been measured on the basis of the market share of the largest four banks in terms of their total assets, total deposits and total credit facilities, at a descending order of the largest four banks to examine the banks competitiveness, and then using a model to estimate the impact of the competitiveness indicators on the banks profitability. The empirical results show that there is a high concentration ratio among the largest four banks, relative to the all other Jordanian commercial banks, and the increase in the total assets and total credit facilities, leads to an increase in the banks’ profitability, while an increase in the banks’ total deposits leads to a decline in their profitability, so we think that this conclusion related to existing of an excess cash in the banks treasuries resulting from the increased volume of untapped deposits, and the banks are not enough able to re-invest these deposits in a profitable projects for their benefits.

Title: CPTED and Workplace Violence in Jordanian Public Hospitals.

Author: Dr. Naser Ibrahim Saif, Published Year: 2015

Faculty: Faculty of Administrative and Financial Sciences

Abstract: In recent years, workplace violence (WPV) has become a serious problem in public hospitals in Jordan. This study focuses on whether and how the use of architectural and management solutions that rely mainly on the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) approach (including natural surveillance, natural access control, territorial concern, and management & maintenance) has worked for two Jordanian public hospitals in controlling WPV. This study employed a descriptive research design, and data were collected using quantitative and qualitative methods. The sample population included all the workers at two major referral public hospitals in Jordan. This study found that the hospitals attempted to make significant use of CPTED but that CPTED usage was at least partially ineffective because of poor implementation of its principles and because employees were not sufficiently educated in CPTED to exploit the CPTED engineering and design features. Thus, certain factors that might induce violence were not effectively addressed at both of the hospitals studied. This study thus provides a clear picture of a number of issues contributing to WPV in Jordanian public hospitals that must be addressed by those in charge.

Title: Toward Better Understanding for the So Called ''A Fourth Paradigm'' in the Arab World: A Multiple Case Study on the Telecoms Sector in Jordan

Author: Dr. Naser Khdour , Published Year: 2015

Abstract: This research has alluded to Weirs paper on management in the Arab world as a fourth paradigm that can be seen as distinct from the US, European and Japanese models. Case study investigation is used to explore and elucidate the 'lived experience' of management in these organizations. Weir talks about cultural values and a matrix of belief in behavioral practice and associational norms, also Arab management approach relies on ‘networks of relatives and friends’ which stimulates the researchers to cover these issues under the social capital umbrella. The interviews material has shown that whilst the idea of a radically discontinuous paradigm shift sits uneasily with the idea of organizationally and culturally hybrid forms of borrowing, it is nevertheless possible to discern a number of ways in which Weir’s argument might be nuanced. Social capital would form one dimension of the paradigm;Organizational hybridity would represent a second major dimension and neo-tribalism a third whereas relations management would represent a fourth. However, Globalization is considered as an 'external' dimension in which Arab countries are seen to participate in the emerging international division of labour and expertise. The fourth management paradigm was a piece of mosaic; although it includes small pieces of different colours, it is still a distinctive entity in itself.
