The 14th International Conference of Philadelphia University
The Culture of Communication
3 - 5 November 2009
*****************************************************************************************
First: Themes
Successful communication is that which fulfills man's desire for knowledge and cultural exchange. For this purpose, man has created the necessary tools, which include language, the plastic and verbal arts, philosophy, travel, and the latest technological innovations, which have turned the world into a global village.
Impediments against successful communication include war, colonization, hegemonic and exclusivist tendencies, and a myopic sense of superiority, all of which tend to negate the possibility of communication because they presuppose that the different "other" is devoid of value.
The culture of communication poses great challenges to modern international relations and requires a closer look at its philosophy and the ways and means of empowering individuals and communities to interact in order to create a healthy atmosphere of multiculturalism, in which no culture has the right to dominate and to exclude the other.
The conference will be investigating the following topics:
- Strategies of Communication
- Communication in Language, Literature, and Criticism
- Communication in Art and Architecture
- Communication in History
- Translation as a Means of Communication
- Travel and Diplomatic Missions in the Culture of Communication
- Mass Media in Cultural Exchange
- The Metropolis as a Center for Cultural Exchange
