Program Learning Outcomes of Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering


The main objectives of the department of biotechnology are:

G1

To attract and retain outstanding students, faculty and staff.

G2

provide the students with the fundamental tools and practical skills required to generate competent highly qualified graduates.

G3

To equip students with the necessary critical theoretical background, develop the analytical, basic research skills that will help the students to pursue higher education in reputed institutes at national and international level.

G4

To develop in students the ability to apply knowledge and skills to solve theoretical and practical problems in biology and biotechnology.

G5

To affirm the concept of team work and communication skills among students for post -baccalaureate employment in the field of biotechnology.

G6

To provide the students with the basis for the life-long self-learning in an attempt to keep up with the continuous quick changes in the field of biotechnology.

To foster entrepreneurship among students in areas pertinent to biotechnology.

To acquaint the students with the principles of biosafety and ethical perspectives of biotechnological systems.

To organize and participate in meetings, conferences, symposiums, workshops, interaction and collaboration between researchers and academic institutions nationally and internationally.

To establish a strong reliable infrastructure and facilities to implement the current advanced applications in biotechnology and gene sequencing as a diagnostic tool for genetic disorders among Jordanian families. In addition to the applications in plant, microbiology and environment.

 

Upon the completion and graduation from the department of biotechnology, the students should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding:

Understand and recognize the biochemical, molecular and cellular structure of organisms and biological systems.

Understand the concepts, regulation and applications of the existing and emerging methods of biotechnology.

K2

Understand the fundamental concepts of molecular biology like DNA chemistry, DNA replication and recombinant DNA techniques.

K3

Understand the basic Mendelian and non-Mendelian rules of heredity.

K4

Define basic concepts in microbial biotechnology and ecology for biodegradation and bioremediation of pollutants, fermentation kinetics, primary / secondary metabolite excretion and ingredients for food industry.

K5

Extract data from specific databases using accessions numbers, gene names, run simple analyses on genomic sequences, identify features on the sequence such as coding regions, restriction enzyme sites, prediction of protein structure.

K6

Intellectual skills

Demonstrate critical thinking skills, utilize a wide range of information sources, perform analytical lab work, communicate and interpret  scientific ideas and principles through oral presentations and written reports.

Professional and practical skill

Design and manage scientific Biological laboratories.

Investigate and analyse the role of heredity and molecular genetics concepts in human disorders and congenital abnormalities.

Demonstrate ability and responsibility in using and preserving laboratory equipments necessary in the applications of biotechnology and related fields.

Demonstrate proficiency; establish, maintain and preserve cell cultures using aseptic techniques and standard procedures.

Conduct basic informatics research using online resources.

General and transferable Skills:

Collaborate with team members on time management balancing workload utilizing, preserving and maintaining equipments.
